A police station in Kabul has been targeted by a bombing attack, with gunfire reportedly heard the Afghan capital.

The incident took place on Friday when a bomber detonated himself at a police station in Kotai Sangi area.

A group of armed militants broke into the police headquarters minutes later and a second explosion was heard.

Witnesses said gunfire and rocket explosions could still be heard in the area.

However, Afghan officials later said a man hurled a hand-grenade at the station, which drew back fire from the police forces on the scene.

The assailant managed to escape after a brief gun battle, the sources said on condition of anonymity.

The officials said no one was injured in the attack, which the Taliban later claimed responsibility for.
