UN approves Arab resolution on Syria

The UN General Assembly has approved an Arab-sponsored draft resolution on Syria, strongly condemning the Syrian government and backs an Arab League plan aimed at ending the violence.

The draft resolution, drawn up by Saudi Arabia and introduced to the 193-member General Assembly by Egypt on behalf of the Arab countries, was adopted by 137 votes to 12 with 17 abstentions
According to the resolution, the General Assembly requests the secretary-general and all relevant UN bodies to provide support to the efforts of the League of Arab States to promote a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis and appoint a special envoy to Syria as well as provide technical and material assistance
