A search team has found the black box of a Russian Sukhoi Superjet 100 plane, six days after it slammed into the side of a dormant volcano in Indonesia, killing all 45 people on board.

"We found the black box at around 10 this morning (0300 GMT). It was found around 100 meters (328 feet) from where we located the tail," AFP quoted Ketut Parwa, the head of the search operation, as saying near the crash site at Mount Salak in West Java province late on Tuesday.

The black box of Russia's first post-Soviet civilian jet will be sent to Indonesia’s National Committee for Transportation Safety, which is tasked with investigating the crash with the help of more than 70 Russian experts.

The jet took off from an airport in Jakarta on May 9 on its second demonstration flight but it lost radio contact and vanished from radar screens 50 minutes later. It had been to Myanmar, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan, and was supposed to fly to Laos and Vietnam after Indonesia.

The new passenger aircraft was built by a joint venture between Russia’s Sukhoi, Italy's Finmeccanica, and a number of other firms from Russia and other countries.
