A former senior American commander in Afghanistan has been charged in the US with sexual abuse of female subordinates, and illegal possession of alcohol and pornographic material while deployed.
Deputy Commander of US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan Brigadier General Jeffrey A. Sinclair was sent back to the United States in May. He faces other charges including mistreatment of female soldiers under his command and abusing a government travel charge card, local media reported on Wednesday.

The US Army reportedly announced the charges against Sinclair at Fort Bragg Military Base in North Carolina, home to the 82nd Airborne. The senior commander, a 27-year veteran in the Army, faces a preliminary hearing to decide whether the indictments should be referred to a court-martial.
Trained as a paratrooper, Sinclair reportedly served three tours in Afghanistan and two in Iraq with the US-led military forces.
Authorities at Fort Bragg refused to offer details regarding the charges against the Army
